Last off-season, there were multiple Redblacks fans questioning GM Marcel Desjardins’ actions, as the team lost QB Trevor Harris, RB William Powell, WR Greg Ellingson and Diontae Spencer along with OL Sir Vincent Rogers. Those were big pieces to the Ottawa Redblacks puzzle in 2018, and come 2019, they couldn’t quite fill the missing pieces.
In 2019, the team went 3-15 and the team’s MOP was Avery Williams who played in just 11 games.
Although last year was tough for Redblacks fans, they just had to wait their turn. Their turn didn’t take too long to come as it seems, today as the CFL opened up free agency, the Ottawa Redblacks made sure they made a positive impact, and they did.
In the early hours, the team brought in both Cleyon Laing and Don Unamba which showed promise that the Redblacks defense would be a factor in next years CFL season. The team was a factor early on in free agency, but how about at the end of the day! To finish the day off the Redblacks had signed Christophe Mulamba, and Abdul Kanneh to add to Laing and Unamba.
To pair with the big defensive signings, the Ottawa Redblacks did make a move on running back/ slot back Anthony Coombs. Coombs isn’t exactly the big name receiver most of you expected to come to the capital, but him flexing at both running back and receiver can be a huge part to LaPolice’s system.
When he was asked about his salary situation, it didn’t sound like Marcel Desjardins and the Redblacks have much to spend, so today’s big moves may be the rest of the excitement, other than a few smaller moves to come later.
