Last CFL season, the Ottawa Redblacks fell to the bottom of the CFL standings with just 3 wins and 15 losses. It seemed like there hadn’t been much going for the team, and the 15 losses that the team had fell in the hands of the quarterback position.
The quarterback position for the Redblacks didn’t have a clear starting quarterback out of the gate going into the season, nor did they closing off the season. The team juggled between 3 quarterbacks throughout the season, seeing Dominique Davis and Jonathon Jennings fight out a quarterback battle at the beginning of the season and Will Arndt closing the season with 4 consecutive starts.

The three quarterbacks were only able to throw for 4,310 yards and they formed a very poor touchdown to interception ratio at 11:27.
Those numbers are now found in the past, and they’ll stay in the past from the looks of the roster coming together in 2020. Only one of the three quarterbacks from the 2019 campaign will remain in red and black as the team announced they released both quarterbacks Will Arndt and Jonathon Jennings.
These moves made by the Redblacks came shortly after the trade which gave the team the rights to former Calgary Stampeders quarterback Nick Arbuckle. Although they traded for his rights, the Redblacks are yet to sign Arbuckle to a contract. Things are beginning to get serious between both Marcel Desjardins and Nick Arbuckle, and it looks like he may be the quarterback in Ottawa this season.
Although it looks like Arbuckle is our guy, Matt Nichols was just recently released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers where he played 5 years under Paul LaPolice’s offensive system. Nichols has been able to speak with the Redblacks since he was released by Winnipeg, although nothing has been announced for a contract.
As we sit just over 2 weeks away from CFL free agency, it looks as if the Redblacks have it narrowed down to Matt Nichols or Nick Arbuckle to take the starting quarterback job this season.
Who do you think will be the QB?
