University of Ottawa Gee Gees and Carleton University Ravens football teams to face off at TD Place on Thursday, expect a Panda Game 2.0

On October 2nd both the University of Ottawa Gee Gees and the Carleton University Ravens football teams faced off against each other under the lights at TD Place for the annual Panda Game. The game ended in a 19 to 17 Gee Gees win thanks to a Campbell Fair game winning field goal with just over a minute left in the game, but Carleton is ready to fight back in what looks to be a Panda Game rematch this Thursday at TD Place.

At TD Place, at 6:00 on Thursday the Gee Gees and Ravens will face each other once again in the shortened 2021 OUA season and the game will have a large impact on the future of both programs. The winner of Thursday’s game at TD Place will enter the playoffs for the 2021 season and test their chances at the 2021 Vanier Cup in Quebec City on December 4th.

In the Panda Game earlier this month, the Gee Gees saw running back J.P Cimankinda run all over the Ravens, carrying the rock 22 times for a total 133 rushing yards. They also had Rodney Estime, Daniel Oladejo and Tristan Park make a number of big plays for quarterbacks Ben Maracle and Matt Mahler in the passing game and for the University of Ottawa the same players are expected to make a large impact on the next game they play against the Ravens on Thursday.

This season quarterback Ben Maracle has thrown for over 1,100 yards and 2 scores in 5 games, although he has suffered some injuries taking him out of the end of two games this season it hasn’t stopped him from connecting with his receivers. Rodney Estime, Nathan Walker and Daniel Oladejo have combined for 55 receptions, 700 yards and a touchdown through 5 games while running backs J.P Cimankinda and Dawson Odei have gained over 500 yards themselves, 495 on the ground. Defensive playmakers James Peter and TK Victome have also been the face of any Gee Gees success this season, Peter making a team lead 32 tackles, 2 sacks and 3 tackles for loss while Victome has one interception and 2 pass breakups on top of 17 tackles. The two alongside Alex Douglas, Luke Griese, Michael Pezzuto and other defensive starters are expected to make some plays against the Ravens, and as for the Ravens, they’ll likely make some plays of their own on Thursday to make it a game to watch.

Although quarterback Tanner Dejong has faced injuries which have sidelined him for the majority of the 2021 OUA season, the Carleton University offence has still been able to move the ball. Breaking the school record for most rushing yards in a career, Nathan Carter has been a big piece of the Ravens offence this season, rushing for 318 yards and 2 scores on just 62 carries. Receivers Glodin Mualal and Keaton Bruggeling have led the passing attack, Mualal with 221 yards on 16 catches and Bruggeling with 3 receiving touchdowns but freshman receiver Kaseem Ferdinand is also getting some action on the offence and is showing extreme potential to be the next big thing to come from the Ravens football program. On just 9 receptions over the 5 games played this season Ferdinand has gained 157 yards and scored one touchdown. Ferdinand, despite being 5-foot-10 is a deep threat receiver thanks to his insane speed and agility. In Toronto the Ravens experimented in his deep threat ability, 101 yards and a touchdown later they may have found their number one receiver for the future and suiting up for the second time against the University of Ottawa, he may be a large part of the Ravens game plan against the Gee Gees.

On the Ravens defence, lockdown corner back and special teams demon Jonathan Edouard is expected to have a big game. In what could be his final game with the Ravens, Edouard, in front of the fans at TD Place stadium can have a good day against the Gee Gees pass game and with the Ravens struggling on offence this season without Dejong in the lineup they will need to have his help on the punt team as well. Linebacker Malik Yusuf from the Ottawa area has been a large part in the Ravens defence this year, making 16 tackles and a sack and as he faces off against some of his former teammates and rivals from youth league on Thursday against the University of Ottawa he should make some plays.

Kaseem Ferdinand’s twin Denny has also been a playmaker on special teams this year as a freshman. He has over 400 yards in kickoff and punt returning, giving the Ravens great field position on a number of occasions this season and will do so again against the Gee Gees. Along with Ferdinand, kicker Brandon Forcier has also made an impact on the special teams unit, being 8 of 8 for field goals and 8 for 8 in extra points. His longest field goal this season is 38 yards.

Tickets are on sale for Thursday’s game between the Ravens and Gee Gees at the University of Ottawa Gee Gees website. Don’t miss the big game!

Ottawa Redblacks and general manager Marcel Desjardins partways, what is next in the capital?

The Ottawa Redblacks and the city of Ottawa have now been a part of the CFL once again for 7 seasons and 9 full calendar years. Over the years the capital of Canada has seen 3 Grey Cup appearances, including the 2016 Grey Cup victory in Toronto and have been in front of a very successful CFL franchise since the rebirth of Ottawa’s team. In the front lines of all of the success through the 9 years and 7 seasons has been general manager Marcel Desjardins and following a 2019 CFL season where the team fell to 3-15 and a 2021 season where they have fallen out of playoff contention yet again it has been announced that the Ottawa Redblacks and Marcel Desjardins have parted ways. Monday marks a sad day in Ottawa Redblacks history as fans, players, coaches and staff look back at all that Desjardins brought to this city. Being the first ever general manager for the franchise, Marcel Desjardins started from scratch with the Ottawa Redblacks and built a roster that went to two straight Grey Cups in just one year. It will forever be an incredible thing to look back on in Ottawa sports history, but one thing about the sports business is that the past doesn’t really matter if you haven’t succeeded recently, it is a “what have you done for me lately” business and the Ottawa Redblacks organization are moving forward from general manager Marcel Desjardins and have all eyes on success in the coming years.

When asked about the firing of general manager Marcel Desjardins, owner of the Ottawa Redblacks Mark Goudie had mentioned ”Marcel was the first employee hired by the REDBLACKS back in 2013” said Mark Goudie, President & CEO, Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG).  “He has put everything that he has into our organization.  His many accomplishments include bringing Ottawa its first Grey Cup win in 40 years.   I respect Marcel very much and thank him for his unwavering commitment to the REDBLACKS, RNation and our community.”

In the mean time, both Jeremy Snyder who has been with the team since 2013 and Jean Marc Edmé who has been in Ottawa since 2016 will be at the head of the Ottawa Redblacks front office but Goudie does expect to be on the lookout for a new general manager soon. The permanent general manager may come from within with Snyder or Edmé because of the great work the two have done over their time spent with the Redblacks and it shouldn’t be a surprise if that were to happen, however fans and media have been putting their own ideas out on social media. The names Geroy Simon, Danny McManus, Chris Jones, Neil McEvoy, John Murphy, Jim Popp, Jim Barker, and Marc Trestman are just some of the many names mentioned thus far and as the Ottawa Redblacks approach the final last three games of the 2021 CFL season there are a number of decisions expected to be made that will impact the future.

Ottawa will face the Calgary Stampeders, Toronto Argonauts and Montreal Alouettes to close the 2021 season.

Canadian playmakers make mark on NCAA, who to keep eyes on from up north

Over the weekend, football fans from the north side of the Canada-USA border were given something to cheer about. Yes, the CFL had a great triple header on Saturday as well as a Friday night battle in Montreal which gave the whole country of Canada something to be thankful for after not seeing a single CFL game in 2020, but Canadians were also able to watch players from their home country make an impact on both the NCAA and NFL this weekend as well.

Leading the pack is 2021 NFL Draft prospect from Brampton, Ontario, John Metchie. Metchie, a receiver out of Alabama caught 11 passes for 121 yards and two scores in a Crimson Tide win over Tennessee. He was just one of many players that made a mark on the NCAA over the weekend and with over 600 receiving yards, he leads the group of Canadian skill position players. Nick Mardner also has 29 receptions for 583 yards and 3 scores at receiver with Hawaii, while other Canadian playmakers Samuel Emilus, Jared Wayne, Ajou Ajou and Damien Alford combine for 866 yards and 6 touchdowns at wideout. Illinois running back Chase Brown from London, Ontario also had a big weekend, running for 223 yards and a touchdown on 33 rushes. He has 757 scrimmage yards on the season as well as 4 touchdowns making him a top 10 runner in the BIG Ten. Fellow Canadian running back out of Ottawa Fabrice Mukendi ran for 73 yards of his own with Bryant on the weekend, giving him 517 rushing yards and 5 scores on the ground in his breakout freshman campaign.

Defensive playmakers Jesse Luketa, Akeem Mesidor and Jett Elad also had big games over the weekend. Luketa making 6 tackles and a sack, adding to his 33 tackles, and interception for a touchdown earlier in the season. Mesidor made yet another sack in his young NCAA career, giving him 8 in just his first 15 games with West Virginia. Elad has been a leading Canadian defensive back in this year’s NCAA season, and with Ohio this weekend against Kent State he was able to make 7 tackles as well as a tackle for loss. The draft eligible defensive playmaker has 29 tackles and 3 pass breakups on the season.

In the NFL, Canadians Benjamin St Juste, Jevon Holland and Chuba Hubbard also put on for their home country. As they play in week 7 of their rookie campaigns in the NFL, Benjamin St Juste made 3 tackles against the Green Bay Packers, Chuba Hubbard gained an all-purpose 56 yards on 16 offensive touches and Dolphins star safety Jevon Holland made 5 tackles, a sack and broke up a pass, making him the Canadian player of the week in the NFL by a long shot with a number of other Canadians on their bye week in week 7.

Continue to watch and cheer on all Canadians making plays south of the border, as it is just a matter of time before they make an impact that shocks the world.

Documentary “Journey From The 613” hits one year anniversary; a look at the project that launched JZ Media

On Tuesday May 26th 2020 I got on a FaceTime call with Ottawa Redblacks’ star defensive back Sherrod Baltimore which I would say changed my life. Just over 2 months into the COVID-19 pandemic, I was bored out of my mind. Being locked up in one home for what felt like forever, being around the same people every day and with nothing interesting happening around the world, it felt like there was a huge pause on life, but in reality time was still ticking and I was eager to do something, something productive and meaningful.

As a sports reporter, there weren’t a lot of stories to be told considering there were no sports being played worldwide and with school being moved online I had a lot of time on my hands to do something productive. I began to think of ways I can be productive and think of projects that can not only help kill time during the lockdown but also benefit myself in the long run. A few ideas came to mind, and originally I was thinking of just doing small stories on some Ottawa Redblacks players here and there, telling the story of how they got to where they are and why they should be watched moving forward in their careers, but those ideas shifted once I talked to Sherrod Baltimore. Sherrod and I had done some work together prior to the pandemic, and we’d known each other since he came to Ottawa in 2017 so I was hoping to do a short story on him, similar to those I was planning on posting and while we were in the mix of starting that story he brought up an idea of his own. After having his own story highlighted in a TSN Original Documentary during the 2019 CFL season by Rick Westhead, Sherrod wanted to highlight the stories of some athletes he’s met while in Ottawa. He approached me with the idea of telling the story of how a football player from Ottawa makes it to the NFL and/or CFL, the goal would be to show people around the world how difficult the journey can be and to inspire the next generation of 613 athletes to continue their own journey.

At the time I had only written articles on my Ottawa Redblacks based website and created a few highlight tapes and vlogs so I wasn’t sure exactly how great the story was going to look as a documentary, but I knew I was all in for the project. Anytime someone like Sherrod comes around with an insane opportunity like that, you’ve got to jump on it and I’m glad I did.

The project ended up taking just over 3 months to be completed and looking back at it, those are three of the best months of my young career in the sports media business. Throughout the time planning, filming, doing interviews, editing, marketing and publishing the documentary which we call “The Journey From The 613” I met so many great people, I learnt more than I thought I ever would and I gained some awesome experience, working on a project like that. Everything about the project was beneficial, and the content provided, although it may not have been a TSN or ESPN production, was something I am proud of and thankful for.

Telling the story behind Sherrod’s relationship with Coach Jean Guillaume, a legendary coach in Ottawa who I am blessed to be able to call a mentor now as well as the stories of Ottawa-raised football stars like Neville Gallimore, Eli Ankou, Jesse Luketa, Christo Bilukidi, Akheem Mesidor, Katley Joseph, Jackson Bennett, Alex Mateas, Jesse Palmer and more was a fantastic idea. Getting over 13,000 combined views on YouTube, “The Journey From The 613” reached the eyes of many people and really brought together the football community in Ottawa, showcasing the stories of players from all over the city, from the east side of Ottawa to the west side, the project’s main goal was to bring the city together as one and provide the exposure that the athletes from the capital of Canada truly deserve.

I truly believe a lot was accomplished through this one 4 part documentary series, and it kickstarted something even bigger in my platform JZ Media which is approaching it’s one year anniversary as we look back on the documentary that was posted October 24th, 2020. My website at jzmedia.ca and the entire platform I have created with JZ Media would not exist if it hadn’t been for the documentary I worked on with Sherrod Baltimore and Coach Jean Guillaume last year. The impact they’ve left on myself and the opportunities they each have gifted me is unbelievable. JZ Media has over 300 articles published, and continues to hit milestones as I move forward with my career in sports media.

Devlin “Duck” Hodges makes first CFL appearance as Ottawa Redblacks fall to Hamilton Tiger-Cats 32-3

The 2021 CFL season has not gone the Ottawa Redblacks’ way. On Saturday they lost to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and fell to 2-9. They are at the bottom of the CFL for the second straight season and with just three games remaining on the schedule the only hope is for the future. Luckily for Redblacks fans though, they are getting a great preview of what their future may look like and there are plenty of bright spots to look forward to moving into the future.

Paul LaPolice and the Redblacks lost 32-3 on Saturday to the Tiger-Cats and there is no denying that it was a bad football game for the Ottawa Redblacks but on a positive note, Devlin “Duck” Hodges received his first game action in the CFL. Hodges’ CFL debut has been long awaited by many fans and in his first game with Ottawa he was 8 of 16 for 49 passing yards, ran for 13 yards and threw one interception. He came in for 23 year old Caleb Evans who started the game and was 12 of 15 for 138 passing yards, had one run for 10 yards and threw two interceptions. The two quarterbacks made a few mistakes each, but continue to progress as they reach the last three games of their first CFL seasons.

All photos except for the one of Terry Williams found on Ottawa REDBLACKS Twitter

Redblacks fans have also been able to get their first looks at running back De’Lance Turner who may just be the running back of the future in Ottawa. Against the Tiger-Cats, after running for over 100 yards in two appearances against the Alouettes Turner had ran for 29 yards on 6 carries. Turner averaged 4.8 yards per carry on Saturday and had a long of 14 yards. With 132 yards rushing on just 23 carries in three starts, Turner will likely close the season out as the Redblacks’ starting running back but will have newly signed Patrick Carr out of Houston in the backfield battle with him next week once he is out of quarantine.

Still on the offensive side of the ball, wide receiver Ryan Davis has been playing lights out all season. He had just 2 receptions for 16 yards on Saturday but has 527 yards and two scores on the season. At just 24 years old Davis, as the Redblacks’ leading receiver may just be one of the top receivers in the CFL in the near future and is playing alongside R.J Harris and Kenny Stafford, two veteran receivers that combined for 80 yards in Hamilton. Nate Behar also caught 5 passes of his own for 46 yards against the Tiger-Cats and has had the best year of his CFL career with 324 yards on 31 catches in the eleven games.

On defence, Mike Benevides has been gifted with some playmakers. Despite giving up 320 yards in the air from Jeremiah Masoli on Saturday, Redblacks’ Micah Awe had a good game for himself with 6 tackles and a sack, adding to his totals as one of the league’s top tacklers alongside teammate Avery Williams who went into the game as the second leading tackler in the CFL. Sherrod Baltimore and Abdul Kanneh combined for 10 tackles in the secondary and continue to make plays of their own, but as the Redblacks go into the final 3 games of the CFL season it may be best to take a look at their young talent for the future. Players like Brandin Dandridge, Treshaun Abrahams-Webster, Kene Onyeka, Frankie Griffin, Jerod Fernandez, Shaheed Salmon, Adam Auclair, Tre Hornbuckle, Ranthony Texada, and Reshaan Davis may see a lot more action in the coming weeks as they look to prove themselves as defensive playmakers for Mike Benevides.

Bob Dyce’s special teams unit helped the Ottawa Redblacks once again today, Lewis Ward was 1/1, putting the only points on the scoreboard, Richie Leone punted 8 times for 338 yards and in place of DeVonte Dedmon returner Terry Williams had over 120 yards on returns, including a 49 yard punt return which if he hadn’t run out of bounds after losing balance he could have taken it 82 yards to the house. Williams is a 5-foot-9, 170 pound slot receiver with 4.50 speed and has plenty of potential moving forward, with he and Dedmon in the picture for the Ottawa Redblacks, R-Nation can expect a great return every time one of them touch the ball, especially if Bob Dyce is calling the shots.

The Redblacks will play their next game on Friday against the Calgary Stampeders at TD Place Stadium in Ottawa and with 3 games remaining on the schedule Paul LaPolice and his unit will look to finish the year with a 5-9 record, ending the season with 3 straight wins.

Caleb Evans and the Ottawa Redblacks look to rebound in Hamilton on Saturday

On Saturday the Ottawa Redblacks will be in Hamilton, playing the Tiger-Cats at 4:00 eastern day light time at Tim Hortons Field. The week 12 matchup will mark 23 year old quarterback Caleb Evans’ 5th career start and after 3 straight losses he and his teammates will look to rebound and get back in the win column as they reach the last 4 games of the 2021 CFL season.

Evans, despite losing three straight games has played well as a rookie quarterback, throwing for 795 yards and 4 scores while even running for 208 yards. There have also been 7 interceptions thrown, however as a rookie quarterback that has zero experience going into this season at the professional level, those are mistakes that were expected out of him and he has been impressing everyone around the CFL thus far in his career. In Hamilton, he will be alongside Devlin Hodges on the depth chart at the quarterback position as well. So if the game doesn’t go the Redblacks’ way like last week against the Alouettes, Hodges may also see his first career CFL action.

That is not guaranteed though, but what is guaranteed is the game action that running back De’Lance Turner will see in Hamilton in his 3rd career CFL start for the Redblacks. In his debut in Montreal he carried the ball 10 times for 71 yards and added 15 receiving yards to his totals on 3 receptions, in last week’s home matchup against the Alouettes he had 32 rushing yards, giving him over 100 yards rushing over two games. He will look to run for 100 yards in one single game as he faces the Tiger-Cats on Saturday to open up Evans’ passing and run game of his own. Evans’ favourite targets R.J Harris and Ryan Davis will be in the lineup once again and after catching just 3 passes in the last two games, R.J Harris will need to be incorporated into the game plan to ensure that the Redblacks and the offence have a chance in Hamilton.

On the defensive side of the ball, Redblacks’ star linebacker Avery Williams is returning to the lineup after missing last week’s game against the Alouettes and big games are expected out of defensive backs Abdul Kanneh, Sherrod Baltimore and Brandin Dandridge as they look to lead Mike Benevides’ defence to some late season success alongside defensive linemen Cleyon Laing and Avery Ellis.

For Bob Dyce’s special teams crew, the Ottawa Redblacks will be without electric kickoff returner DeVonte Dedmon but will indeed see the first CFL action of slot receiver and speedster Terry Williams. Williams, the former University of Tennessee Martin star will look to make an impact in the return game, as if Dedmon were there.

Watch the Redblacks from home tomorrow as they take on the Tiger-Cats at 4:00 in Hamilton. The game will be televised on TSN and ESPN2.

Ottawa Redblacks lose CFL’s top returner DeVonte Dedmon to injury, who will fill in for him on Saturday in Hamilton?

The Ottawa Redblacks lost to the Montreal Alouettes last week in a 27-16 battle at TD Place. Ottawa’s loss doesn’t mathematically eliminate them from the playoffs, however with Hamilton sitting at 4-5, Montreal at 5-4 and Toronto at 6-3 ahead of them in the east division hunt, it is very unlikely that they make their ways to the Grey Cup come December 12th, but what happened during the game, the injury of electric kickoff return specialist DeVonte Dedmon is what impacted the fans the most at TD Place last weekend. Going into the game, Redblacks fans didn’t expect anything too crazy to happen. They weren’t expecting a big Redblacks win, and most weren’t even thinking about playoffs, so the loss felt normal to them however losing Dedmon was hard for the entire stadium. After two long returns in the first quarter which both were close to large touchdowns, TD Place went quiet when DeVonte Dedmon hit the turf with a lower leg injury. He didn’t return to the field for the remainder of the game and stayed on the sidelines with crutches and a boot on top of his ankle. Without Dedmon, in the other three quarters of the game, wide receiver Ryan Davis returned kicks and punts, combining for 93 yards on 10 special teams touches but with Davis playing a large role as the Redblacks’ leading receiver, R-Nation may see someone else, someone they haven’t heard of returning kicks on Saturday in Hamilton for their next game.

That someone would be Greenwood, Mississippi native Terry Williams. Williams, a 5-foot-9, 170 pound slot receiver and kickoff return specialist has been with the Ottawa Redblacks for a majority of the season this year. He was in the capital for the 2021 CFL training camp, and returned in September after being cut and sent back home for the month of August. During the past month or so Williams has found himself on the Ottawa Redblacks’ practice roster and has been taking reps at DeVonte Dedmon’s positions with the scout team. At just 5-foot-9, like Dedmon Terry Williams has breakaway speed but is also very agile. From 2014 through the 2016 CFL season the Redblacks had 5-foot-6 receiver, returner Jamill Smith who, may be a few inches shorter than Williams but has similar traits in the return game. Both have explosive speed which is shown right off of the bat. As soon as the ball is in their hands, they are able to make a move and beat the opposing team in a track race to the end zone. As for DeVonte Dedmon, and something Redblacks fans saw with Diontae Spencer as well was the speed build up on kickoff returns. The speed is there right off of the bat like Williams and Smith, however the speed increases during runs, making the two lethal on special teams for Bob Dyce.

Doing a little bit of a background check, Terry Williams, who went to Southaven High School in Southaven, Mississippi made a name for himself at the University of Tennessee Martin in both 2018 and 2019, and that is where he was discovered by the Ottawa Redblacks front office, however he was only able to play with Skyhawks after he attended a Junior College. Going the JUCO route, Williams attended Itawamba Community College in Mississippi where he caught 79 passes for 1,095 yards and 9 scores in just 9 games played. He also returned 6 kickoffs for 191 yards and a touchdown. He then went to the division one level and in 23 games at UTM had 2,519 all-purpose yards and 9 touchdowns on 205 touches. Williams got to those totals with 1,317 receiving yards, 80 yards on the ground and 1,122 return yards. He was named All-OVC first team after the 2019 season and was recognized as one of the conferences premier athletes who was able to not only make plays on offence, scoring 7 touchdowns on that side of the ball but also on special teams where he scored twice.

On Saturday, the Ottawa Redblacks will be playing the Hamilton Tiger Cats at Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton and despite DeVonte Dedmon slowly getting back on the field, now off of crutches it looks as if we may see Terry Williams in red and black this week. Williams was previously wearing number 29 for the Redblacks during practices but is now in number 88 and looks scary in it. Maybe, just in time for halloween next week we will see “Scary Terry” in the endzone for the Redblacks.

Ottawa Redblacks add NFL quarterback Joe Flacco’s brother Tom Flacco to quarterback room

The Ottawa Redblacks sit at 2-8 with 4 games remaining in the 2021 CFL season. After going 3-15 in 2019 and what looks to be a similar outcome in 2021, a rebuild may be upon us, but would you really call it a rebuild? They have all of the right pieces, and it’s been demonstrated time after time this season. Players like Ryan Davis, De’Lance Turner, Caleb Evans, Avery Williams, R.J Harris, Kenny Stafford, Nate Behar, Sherrod Baltimore, Abdul Kanneh, Avery Ellis, Davon Coleman, Praise Martin-Oguike, Brandin Dandridge, DeVonte Dedmon, Lewis Ward, Richie Leone, Micah Awe and Don Unamba are proven winners. They get the job done. Success is bound to come when players like that are on your team, but with 12 players on the field at a time and coaches making a number of decisions alongside the players, it is a lot more complex than just having a list of good players. That is something the Redblacks’ and their fan base has come to realize this season, and that is why, instead of cleaning the house moving into the 2022 CFL season, the Redblacks should keep who they have on the field and add firepower and proven athletes to the mix.

That is what looks to be done within the Ottawa Redblacks organization as they continue to make moves prior to the end of the 2021 CFL season. On Tuesday the Redblacks announced the signing of quarterback Tom Flacco. The addition of Joe Flacco’s brother, Tom, a Townson product and former Saskatchewan Roughrider gives the Redblacks 6 quarterbacks on their current roster. Caleb Evans, Taryn Christion, Devlin Hodges, Dominique Davis, Matt Nichols and Tom Flacco are all listed as Redblacks quarterbacks now. Flacco threw for 2,831 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior at Townson while even playing on the school’s baseball team. He then went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft and spent the 2021 CFL training camp with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. He has since been a free agent and coming to Ottawa he looks to make his name onto the team’s roster moving forward into the future. At 26 years old he has a lot left in the tank, however the rest of the room is young as well. Caleb Evans is 23 years old, Taryn Christion is 24 years old and Devlin Hodges is 25 years old.

Running back Chuba Hubbard scores first career NFL touchdown; Canadians continue make mark on NFL and NCAA

On Sunday, in the middle of the first quarter of the Carolina Panthers and Minnesota Vikings game, Sherwood Park, Alberta native Chuba Hubbard scored his first career NFL touchdown. A two yard score marks the first NFL touchdown from a Canadian running back since Tim Biakabutuka, and adds to Hubbards’ season totals: 281 rushing yards, 82 receiving yards and a score on 85 offensive touches.

Chuba Hubbard isn’t the only Canadian making waves south of the border, though. There are a number of Canadians turning heads early on in the NFL season, and as we reach the back half of the 2021 NCAA Football season, we’re only going to see more of that in the NFL next season. In the NFL, Hubbard’s University teammate from the other side of Alberta Amen Ogbongbemiga racked up 8 tackles from his linebacker spot with the Los Angeles Chargers on the weekend against the Baltimore Ravens. In just 2 games played, he has 9 tackles in his early NFL career. Also with the Chargers, defensive tackle Christian Covington had 4 tackles on the weekend, contributing in his 19 tackles and one sack on the season and rookie wide receiver Joshua Palmer out of Brampton, Ontario made one catch for 8 yards which adds to the 5 for 50 he had going into the weekend. Canadian superstar wide receiver Chase Claypool made two catches for 17 yards, giving him 358 receiving yards and a score on the season with the Steelers while up and coming Canadian defensive back Jevon Holland made 6 tackles and broke up a pass against the Jaguars in London, he has 21 tackles in 6 games this season as a rookie with the Dolphins.

As for the NCAA, the stars of the weekend were John Metchie, and Jared Wayne. Metchie had 7 catches for 117 yards and a score in a Crimson Tide win and Jared Wayne caught 6 passes for 94 yards and a score in a 28-7 Pittsburgh win over Virginia Tech. The two receivers combine for 795 yards receiving and 4 touchdowns on the season and will look to make a similar impact in the NFL soon as they approach the end of their junior seasons, both coming from Ontario.

On the season, Syracuse defensive playmaker Geoff Cantin-Arku has made 28 tackles and a sack, making his name known across the country as well as Boise State’s Isaiah Bagnah from Lethbridge, Alberta who has 5 sacks, a forced fumble and 21 tackles at defensive end, Bryant running back Fabrice Mukendi out of Ottawa, Ontario with 423 rushing yards and 5 touchdowns in 7 games, Enock Makonzo from Coastal Carolina University with 30 tackles from his safety position, Luiji Vilain of Wake Forest, among the ACC lead with 3.5 sacks and a forced fumble, Penn State linebacker Jesse Luketa with 27 tackles and a one handed pick six, both Alonzo Addae who has 39 tackles, a sack and three pass deflections and Akeem Mesidor who has 1.5 sacks and 18 tackles on the season from West Virginia continue to make names for themselves and so do twins Chase and Sydney Brown at Illinois. Sydney Brown, from his safety position has 36 tackles, 2 pass deflections and a forced fumble while running back Chase Brown has 60 carries for 414 yards and 3 scores on the ground, pairing with 104 yards receiving thus far this season. Other names creating buzz would be Deane Leonard and Tavius Robinson of Ole Miss, Jett Elad of Ohio, Ludovic Choquette of Western Illinois, Nick Mardner from Hawaii and young Syracuse receiver Damien Alford as well. They each, along with a number of other Canadians have been making plays across the NCAA this season and are paving the way for more athletes to make their way into the NCAA and even the NFL in the near future.

This upcoming week, Canadians to watch would include Enock Makonzo on Wednesday night as he and Coastal Carolina kick-off the week against Appalachian State, Jesse Luketa, Jonathan Sutherland, Sydney Brown and Chase Brown as they all play against each other in the Penn State vs Illinois matchup on Saturday, high school teammates Ajou Ajou and Jared Wayne on Saturday in Clemson vs Pitt, and Canadian trio Deshawn Stevens, Alonzo Addae and Akeem Mesidor against TCU on Saturday. Be on the lookout for them in the NCAA this weekend and continue to watch the Canadians in the NFL, its only a matter of time before they take over the league.

Redblacks’ linebacker Micah Awe looks to “blow football up in Canada.” with PurpleShift, Football Canada partnership

10 games into the 2021 CFL season, Ottawa Redblacks linebacker Micah Awe has made 59 total tackles, a sack and has forced a fumble. After being signed by the Redblacks late in the 2020-21 CFL off-season he, alongside fellow linebackers Avery Williams and Don Unamba has made his presence felt on what could be one of the CFL’s top defences. It’s clear that signing Awe has been a big acquisition for Mike Benevides and the Ottawa Redblacks’ defence, but also has helped the team off of the field. Micah Awe has brought a positive energy to the Ottawa Redblacks’ locker room at TD Place which has helped the team stay positive over the span of the season, which they now sit at 2-8, and on top of that he has also brought a business and entrepreneurial mindset to the Redblacks’ locker room through his app “PurpleShift.”

Awe’s app, “PurpleShift” is a combine testing and fitness based app where people of all ages have the opportunity to see their results in the 40 yard dash, 20 yard shuttle, 3 cone drill, vertical jump, broad jump and a number of other combine activities which just announced a partnership with Jim Mullin’s Football Canada. “Its incredible! It can be historical.” Micah Awe said regarding the partnership, “I come from Texas where everywhere you go football is such a big part of the communities and yeah football is a sport and a lot of people may think sports is just sports but it is much more than that. Football can bring everyone together and I want that same connection that football has in Texas to come to life here in Canada too. With this partnership, I think it is possible. PurpleShift wasn’t just made for athletes, it was made for the average person and Jim Mullin has been busy with Football Canada. We both have the same idea of growing football in Canada.”

The growth of football in Canada is something that Micah Awe has seen and been on the front lines for, now in his 4th CFL season, having played with the B.C Lions and Toronto Argonauts previously and he is ready to help it grow even more moving forward. Talking about the potential of Canadian football and how PurpleShift can have an impact on the growth of it moving forward, Awe mentioned, “We had 16,000 fans at the Ottawa Redblacks game on Saturday and when I saw that it was awesome because it was a rainy day and that was profanely the fullest I’ve seen the stadium (at TD Place) since I came up here. There is a lot of potential. It’s like ‘man, this can be even better than it is.’ We can really make it a bigger event and I feel like there can be like 5 times the amount of people at the games. It is just a matter of making it fun for everyone and I think that is something that can be done with PurpleShift. It can be as easy as having little events throughout a gameday that include PurpleShift, like a 40 yard dash challenge at half time where fans can get their PurpleShift scores on the field at half-time.”

When interviewed by JZ Media’s Jordan Zlomislic regarding the partnership with Football Canada, Micah Awe had also added, “When I built it I really just built it for the everyday person. I didn’t necessarily build it for the athletes or people like myself. That all came to life afterwards but I built it so that anyone can keep their goals and dreams reachable and continue to progress because anyone that can has the ability to film themselves doing an activity and is able to see their athletic growth and progression through the PurpleShift app. Now there are so many things we can do and I would say the overall goal with it is to now help football blow up in Canada.”

With the mission of making football bigger in Canada, the Ottawa Redblacks’ linebacker looks to make a change in the recruiting side of the game north of the border with his app PurpleShift. Helping get more Canadian athletes playing at the next level, the game will then grow north of the border. “One big way of recruiting is the eye ball test.” he said, “Coaches and scouts at the University level often go to camps or high school games and they take notes as to who may look like a football player or who looks like they can play at that level but to me it goes even deeper than that. To get that eyeball test you have to first be in front of the scouts and that is often the hardest part because you first have to go to certain camps or play in certain games but with PurpleShift you don’t have to be in any certain place at any specific time, all you have to do is film yourself and as an athlete, if being recruited can be as easy as just showing your athleticism at any time through just a series of videos we’ll for sure see a growth for football and it can only help the scouts and coaches too.”

How may it help coaches and scouts in the recruiting and scouting process? Well they can use the app to find their next best players. “Purpleshift can be like Zillow but for football. My fiancé and I actually just got a house in San Antonio and we knew exactly what we were looking for so we just went through the filters and looked at the houses that fit our wants and needs. That is something that coaches can do on PurpleShift.” Awe explained, “They can put in a search for the kind of player they are looking for, the position, the size, the type of athlete and they’ll see a list of athletes that meat that criteria as well as their PurpleShift scores and how they have performed on the app. This can really change the way recruiting is done in Canada and can help so many athletes get the opportunities that they deserve and that they would have never gotten before.”

With the partnership in place between both PurpleShift and Football Canada, Micah Awe now has the opportunity to make the biggest impact on the game of football here in Canada than he has ever had. “The partnership with Football Canada can really turn into something that makes football huge in Canada and that is really the goal.” He said in the interview with Zlomislic, “I want this to change the way people look at football in Canada because as much as we’ve been called a hockey country here the more I’ve been here the more I think this is really a football country.”
