“Last year is last year” says Ottawa Redblacks general manager Marcel Desjardins, “We need the best overall roster possible.”

Today, the Ottawa Redblacks made the deal between both Marcel Desjardins and quarterback Nick Arbuckle official. As the media and came together for a press conference based on Nick Arbuckle’s contract signed in Ottawa, Marcel Desjardins looks at the bright spots from a year ago and whats to come in the future here in Ottawa.

After going 3-15 a season ago, Marcel Desjardins and the Redblacks knew that a change had to come, and the change didn’t wait too long. Just following the Ottawa Redblacks final regular season game on November 1st, head coach Rick Campbell decided to leave Ottawa to pursue new beginnings else where. That move made by Campbell was what turned the off-season upside down. The team’s off-season got even more busy, although Marcel Desjardins proved to many why he is a top general manager in the CFL. Only a month after Campbell’s big decision, the Ottawa Redblacks got a head coach back in Paul LaPolice who had just won the Grey Cup a part of his 4 years as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive coordinator.

Of course this was a big transaction for the Ottawa Redblacks, although it was just a first piece to the unfinished puzzle. LaPolice came to Ottawa, where he spent multiple weeks pretty well building his coaching staff from scratch. He brought in a coaching staff which includes offensive line coach (from the Browns) Bob Wylie, wide receivers coach (played in Winnipeg and Toronto as a DB) Alex Suber, defensive backs coach (coached at University of Alberta) Greg Knox, runningbacks coach (coached at Blue Bombers training camp) Charlie Eger, quarterbacks coach (played NFL and Sask QB coach) Steve Walsh, defensive coordinator (longtime CFL coach, TSN coach) Mike Benevides, and brought back long time special teams coach Bob Dyce. These coaches come together and practically change the identity here in Ottawa, and helps fans to forget about the past season.

Although it looks as if the coaches changed the team’s identity alone, when you look at the transactions that Marcel Desjardins has made prior to free agency, the team is coming together well. One big piece to every team is the quarterback position, and today’s announcement with Nick Arbuckle makes fans look at the team differently. “Last year is last year.” said Desjardins in an interview with myself, “Whether you win the Grey Cup, come close to it or lose the way we did last year, there will always be a reset mindset. Now its just finding the right pieces for the team, whether its the coaching staff, finding a quarterback like Nick (Arbuckle) and now with free agency just around the corner, my mind is set on finding the other pieces to make it all fit.”

As mentioned previously, the Redblacks hosted a press conference today in light of Nick Arbuckle becoming the quarterback of the Ottawa Redblacks, and following the question and answer section, I asked Desjardins what he was most excited about with Arbuckle now on the team. “He gives us a solid foundation at the most important position in football,” says GM Desjardins, “With the coaching staff built for him here, it’s a great thing for the organization. Also today, the media found out the quality kind of person he is and that’s exactly what we look for here in Ottawa, so that being said I’m very excited to have Nick a part of this team.”

With all being said, Marcel Desjardins has been able to put together a solid group of coaches and players thus far, although with a new quarterback in town, a question comes up whether he will be building the team around Arbuckle or not. Desjardins answers with, “Yes, at the end of the day we need to have the best overall roster possible, so there will be some new pieces on offense but there will certainly be some on defense also.”

Sherrod Baltimore’s off-season thoughts, new deal, and more; one on one interview with Sherrod Baltimore of the Ottawa Redblacks

In this video found below, you’ll have the chance to listen in on a conversation between myself and Redblacks defensive back Sherrod Baltimore.

In the interview, Baltimore opens up about what needs to be done this coming CFL season, what he thinks of all the moves the Redblacks have been making along with his opinion on the late Kobe Bryant.

Just two weeks ago, Baltimore and the Redblacks came together on a one-year deal which brings Sherrod Baltimore back to the Redblacks. With this deal, you’ll be seeing a lot of Sherrod Baltimore on this website on interviews, podcasts and even some YouTube videos are in the works also. Stay tuned for more, Go Redblacks!!

The Ottawa Redblacks bring back receiver R.J Harris

Today, the Redblacks who have been busy throughout the off-season released news on another transaction which they made. The team brought up news that RJ Harris will return to the Ottawa Redblacks for the 2020 season.

Harris has been a part of the Redblacks since the end of the 2017 season, and in the past two years, he’s found himself in a big role on the Redblacks offense. In the two years past by, Harris has caught the ball 111 times for a total of 1,471 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Following the news, Harris was asked by the Redblacks about what he thought about the new deal, he explains, “I knew where I wanted to be and my family and I are excited to be back in Ottawa,” said Harris. “We’re thankful for how RNation has welcomed us these past three years. Now it’s time to get the REDBLACKS back where we belong: the 108th Grey Cup!”

Ottawa Redblacks find an agreement with former NFL quarterback Steve Walsh to become the next quarterbacks coach in Ottawa

Last season, the Redblacks juggled between both Beau Walker and Joe Paopao for the quarterback coach position last season, although today’s move made by Ottawa hopes to make it clear who will start and finish the season at the position. Today the team announced that former NFL quarterback and most recently the Saskatchewan Rough Riders quarterback coach would be in town to play the role as a QB coach.

This move comes just days following the signing of Nick Arbuckle, and with Walsh as the team’s newest quarterbacks coach, Marcel Desjardins has hopes that Arbuckle and Walsh put together a solid 2020 campaign.

Ahead of his arrival in Ottawa, as mentioned Walsh played 11 seasons in the NFL splitting time between the Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, St Louis Rams and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his NFL career, he was able to complete over 700 passes for 7,875 yards and 40 touchdowns. In his football playing career, him being a National Champion and Heisman trophy finalist at the University of Miami are highlighted when mentioned.

Welcome to the crew Steve Walsh!

CFL opens first ever negotiation period: who should the Ottawa Redblacks sign in free agency?

Last off-season, the CFL and CFLPA came together on a new CBA, and in the new CBA, it was announced that prior to CFL free agency there will be a window where teams can legally negotiate with pending free agents. Today marks the first day of the time period in which the negotiations will run, the last day of the negotiating period will be next Sunday, February 9th. The window given will be one week long and between the negotiation window and free agency, teams will have an opportunity to see the offers that their players have received and will be given 48 hours to match those offers.

Today marks the first day of this window, and let’s look in on the pending free agents the Ottawa Redblacks should target in free agency.

Abdul Kanneh

The majority of you remember Kanneh from his Grey Cup saving tackle for us in 2016, but thats not the only reason why the Redblacks should bring him back. Sitting at 29 years old, Kanneh has 6 years of CFL experience and is still young enough to play another 6 if he’s healthy enough.

In the 6 years, he found him self playing on both the Ottawa Redblacks, Hamilton Tiger-Cats and most recently the Toronto Argonauts. Although he’s been able to find himself on rosters consistently, he hasn’t been able to stay healthy for a full season. Before the 2019 season, Kanneh’s last full season came in 2016 when he played in the Grey Cup with Ottawa. He struggled to play full seaons in both Hamilton and Toronto, but in 2019 Abdul Kanneh was fortunate to suit up in 16 games and added to his career totals.

The 26 year old has found himself on the field for 74 career games where he has made 252 tackles, 7 quarterback sacks, 7 forced fumbles and 14 interceptions. Among his totals, his 2015 season in Ottawa is his career best with 6 interceptions and 4 forced fumbles.

Not only does Kanneh have a good background in the CFL, but the Redblacks might be in need of him this season. Just last week, the Ottawa Redblacks cornerback Jonathan Rose had spinal surgery and with him potentially out for the 2020 season, Kanneh could be a great replacement on a one-year deal .

Darvin Adams

This off-season, the Redblacks have been very active towards getting a few players from the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. After getting Winnipeg’s offensive coordinator Paul LaPolice as our head-coach he’s been able to bring in a few former Blue Bombers by the names of Kevin Anderson (quarterback), Timothy Flanders (Running back), Dale Warren (linebacker), and Charlie Eger (Running Backs coach).

LaPolice has been able to bring a bit of Winnipeg out east with him, and he should be able to continue to do that as free agency starts up February 11th. Opening up free agency, the Redblacks will be able to sign pending free agent Darvin Adams. Adams has been the number one receiver in Winnipeg for the majority of his career, but last season the Blue Bombers receiving core proved that they can win without him. Prior to the 2019 season, Adams hadn’t had many injury problems, putting the uniform on for 80 career games between both the Toronto Argonauts and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Among the 80 games played, Adams has put himself in CFL record books with 2, 1,000 yard seasons alongside 36 career touchdowns on 317 receptions.

The 30 year old receiver would fit into the Ottawa Redblacks offense because he would be playing under Paul LaPolice once again. If the Redblacks were to sign Adams, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to bring back RJ Harris or Dominique Rhymes to make plays with Adams.

Solomon Elimimian

If you’re a CFL fan, chances are you know Solomon Elimimian. Elimimian has been in the CFL for the past 10 seasons, and he’s been able to make a mark on the CFL record books. The 33 year old linebacker has seen himself suit up for 133 games inside the 10 season career and within the long career he’s been able to make 869 tackles, 33 sacks, 9 forced fumbles and 8 interceptions.

Solomon Elimimian has definitely put together a solid career thus far, and if he is signed to the Ottawa Redblacks he would be a solid leader on the defense for Avery Williams and the young defense in Ottawa.

Along with the veteran role Elimimian would play in Ottawa, he would also have the opportunity to re-unite with the Ottawa Redblacks defensive coordinator Mike Benevides. Benevides was his defensive coordinator and head coach from 2010-2014.

Alex Bazzie

Alex Bazzie is a 29 year old linebacker/defensive lineman in the CFL, who’s been able to split up his career between the BC Lions and Edmonton Eskimos and in the time with both teams he was able to play under Mike Benevides. Mike Benevides was Bazzie’s head coach in BC and his defensive coordinator in Edmonton, and if he is signed by Ottawa, he would be back to play with Benevides.

Among the two stints he’s had in the CFL, Bazzie has been making a name for himself in the league and being an absolute sack machine on all of the defenses he’s been on. In the 6 years he has in the CFL he has over 150 total tackles, 42 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. The 6 years behind him makes his presence felt as a veteran play maker, and if he’s signed by the Ottawa Redblacks he could make plays instantly on the Redblacks defense.

Juwan Brescacin

Juwan Brescacin would be a great pickup for the Ottawa Redblacks this year for free agency. The Canadian receiver has been in the CFL for 4 seasons now, where he’s been able to play in 3 Grey Cups, winning one over Ottawa in 2018 along with losing the first two against the Redblacks and Argos.

In his 4 seasons in Calgary, Brescacin has struggled to be able to remain healthy for a full season, although when he was able to play a full 18 game season in 2018, Juwan Brescacin was a huge piece to the Calgary offensive system racking up over 567 yards and 3 touchdowns. Those numbers in ’18 add to his career totals of 69 receptions, for 1,046 yards and 6 touchdowns.

Brescacin, standing at 6’3 would be a big piece to the offensive puzzle here in Ottawa, where he’d also have the chance to re-united with his quarterback Nick Arbuckle. The two played with eachother in both 2018 and 2019 in Calgary and were able to connect on multiple big gains in the games they played together and if Brescacin is brought to Ottawa, they would be able to connect on many more.

Ottawa Redblacks continue to make transactions; re-sign both kicker Lewis Ward and punter Richie Leone

Since the beginning of the CFL off-season, the Ottawa Redblacks front office has been busy taking care of the team’s roster heading into the 2020 CFL season. One major part of the team that has been worked on thus far is the special teams. Just weeks into the off-season period, the team announced that special teams coordinator Bob Dyce would be back, and following that, they also re-upped the contract of long snapper LP Bourrasa.

Those two moves may sound very minor, although they helped lead up to today’s big moves. Just minutes ahead of the CFL’s first ever negotiations period, the Ottawa Redblacks signed both Richie Leone and Lewis Ward back to the team for 2020. With the NFL still on the back of both of the kicker’s minds, Marcel Desjardins and the two thought a one-year extension would be the best fit.

This past season, the Redblacks fell to 3-15 and it was obviously a tough season for the Redblacks fans. With the number 3 in the win column, fans didn’t have too much to cheer for, but Lewis Ward and Richie Leone helped bring light to difficult times. Whether it was cheering for Ward at the end of his record breaking field goal streak, or cheering for a rouge from Richie Leone, Redblacks fans liked having the two kickers around for the 2019 season, and we look forward to having both of them back in 2020.

Going into 2020, Lewis Ward is 27 years old while Richie Leone is going to be 28 by the start of the season. Sitting at 27 and 28, the two kickers still have hopes of going to the NFL, and the hopes really came into reality this off-season where the were able to try-out for several teams together.

Congratulations to Richie Leone and Lewis Ward on their new contracts in Ottawa, we all look forward to watching you kick this year!

A true underdog story: Nick Arbuckle goes from pool boy to Ottawa Redblacks starting quarterback

Yesterday, the Ottawa Redblacks and Nick Arbuckle came together on a deal which brings him to Ottawa on a two year contract. The two year contract could grow to a total of $1,175,000 with all incentives, although Arbuckle’s road to this big contract didn’t come easy.

Community College

As most people do know, Arbuckle played division 1 NCAA football at the University of Georgia State, but prior to being recruited by the Panthers, he put together two solid seasons at Los Angeles Pierce College. His time at the community college went successful, gaining over 7,000 yards along with 73 passing touchdowns.

Year one at Georgia State

The two years he spent in Los Angeles helped himself get back onto the scouting boards, and not only did he open eyes of division one scouts, he signed with the university of Georgia State. Georgia state brought Arbuckle in for his final two years of eligibility and he proved right away that it was a good idea. In just his first season at the school, Arbuckle set school records with 3,283 passing yards on 259 completions and 23 passing touchdowns. The numbers Nick Arbuckle had in year one didn’t just set school records, but he was also the passing leader in the Sun Belt Conference and he fell at 16th in the NCAAF for passing yards along side 22nd for passing touchdowns.

Year two

Year one at Georgia State, Nick Arbuckle took on a challenge and broke all of the school’s passing records, but in year two Arbuckle went all out. In the 2015 season, Nick Arbuckle won the Sun Belt Conference Student-Athlete of the year, and broke nearly all of the conference’s passing records. He threw for 4,368 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for 6 touchdowns. The numbers he put up in the two seasons combined for on average over 300 passing yards a game, and with that stat he was put into the talks of Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff for being able to do that.

Pro football

Looking over Arbuckle’s University stats, you may sit and wonder why he didn’t get a long term shot at NFL football. He was put into a group of college quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff, and proved that he could do big things at a college level so why didn’t he go to the NFL? Well, Nick Arbuckle did go ton the NFL. Arbuckle signed a mini camp contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers back in 2016.

Arbuckle was cut shortly after the rookie mini camp he spent with the Steelers, and at the time it looked as if he lacked height standing at 6 foot 1, lacked arm strength and after running a 5.23 40 at his Georgia State pro day many also believed he didn’t have the athletic ability to play at the next level.

Keeping his mind on the game

Although he was cut from his only profesional opportunity in Pittsburgh, it didn’t bring any negativity to Arbuckle. Nick Arbuckle and his wife Zakiyyah Shabazz kept positive thoughts during the time away from football and remained thankful to be together.

With Nick’s eyes on opportunities in the CFL and NFL, it was tough for him to find a job where he could just leave for roster spot in Canada or somewhere else. Nick Arbuckle worked two jobs during his waiting time for a contract, while his wife Zakiyyah worked three.

Arbuckle’s two jobs consisted of cleaning pools for a local pool company and washing dishes at a school cafeteria. He mentioned in a previous interview that working two part-time jobs gave him remaining time to train although with the question if he would ever play pro football he mentions, “We (Him and his wife) were just living paycheque to paycheque.”

Cleaning pools and washing dishes ended up being the best way to go in Arbuckle’s career. Just weeks prior to the 2018 CFL season, Nick Arbuckle was brought in to play with the Calgary Stampeders.

In the CFL

After splitting up a 4 year college career between both Pierce College and Georgia State, going through a Pittsburgh Steelers mini camp and juggling two part time jobs, Arbuckle was able to land onto the Calgary Stampeders.

In 2018, Arbuckle was in his first year of his two year contract in Calgary and served as the backup quarterback behind Bo Levi Mitchell. As a backup, Nick Arbuckle was able to get into 6 games where he threw for 144 yards and one touchdown on 17 completions. Along with the passing game he put together behind Mitchell, Arbuckle also played the role as a short yardage quarterback where he rushed for 73 yards and 5 touchdowns on top of 35 carries.

Following a quite successful year as a backup quarterback in Calgary, Arbuckle came back to Calgary in 2019 at the same position. Although Nick Arbuckle was still the Stampeders backup quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell fell onto the injury list and Arbuckle was able to get 7 starts.

Coming to Ottawa

In the 7 starts, Nick Arbuckle threw for over 2,000 yards and 11 touchdowns while rushing for an additional 4 touchdowns. The numbers Arbuckle put up in 2019 put him on the boards of many CFL scouts and fans going into the off-season.

Arbuckle was set to become a free agent on February 11th, although Marcel Desjardins and the Ottawa Redblacks weren’t willing to see him as a free agent. With that being said, Desjardins made a trade with the Calgary Stampeders which left the Redblacks with the rights of Nick Arbuckle.

After the Redblacks traded for the rights of Nick Arbuckle they came together on a two year contract worth up to $1,175,000 over the two years combined.

Congratulations to Nick Arbuckle on the big deal here in Ottawa, Ottawa is excited to see what you’ve got in store with us.

Redblacks front office makes big announcements, bringing back Avery Williams and signing Nick Arbuckle to the squad

The Ottawa Redblacks will be three months into the off-season by tomorrow, February 1st and they’ve proven to be busy throughout the past few months and today is a good example of just that.

Today, January 31st was one of a few days which gave Redblacks fans news to cheer about. The Redblacks front office, led by Marcel Desjardins were successful in negotiations with both Nick Arbuckle and Avery Williams.

Avery Williams has been a big part of the Redblacks defense for the past two seasons, and following his career year in Ottawa which he was able to make 70 tackles and a sack, he scored himself a one year contract extension in Ottawa. The numbers put up in 2019 were all in just 11 games, and with him averaging over 6 tackles a game he was nominated to be the Redblacks MVP representative.

Along with the team’s MOP from a year ago is the MOP hopeful for this coming season, Nick Arbuckle. Arbuckle’s rights were traded to Ottawa a few weeks ago from Calgary and today, the two Nick Arbuckle and Marcel Desjardins were able to come together on a contract.

Last season, Arbuckle started 7 games where he combined for over 2,000 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions along with 4 rushing tds.

Arbuckle’s numbers and reputation from the past earned him a $210,000 signing bonus on a possible $470,000 contract with incentives in 2020 and a possible $490,000 in 2021.

Welcome back to Ottawa Avery Williams, and Welcome to the team Nick Arbuckle!

Who will be the quarterback of the Ottawa Redblacks this season?

Last CFL season, the Ottawa Redblacks fell to the bottom of the CFL standings with just 3 wins and 15 losses. It seemed like there hadn’t been much going for the team, and the 15 losses that the team had fell in the hands of the quarterback position.

The quarterback position for the Redblacks didn’t have a clear starting quarterback out of the gate going into the season, nor did they closing off the season. The team juggled between 3 quarterbacks throughout the season, seeing Dominique Davis and Jonathon Jennings fight out a quarterback battle at the beginning of the season and Will Arndt closing the season with 4 consecutive starts.

The three quarterbacks were only able to throw for 4,310 yards and they formed a very poor touchdown to interception ratio at 11:27.

Those numbers are now found in the past, and they’ll stay in the past from the looks of the roster coming together in 2020. Only one of the three quarterbacks from the 2019 campaign will remain in red and black as the team announced they released both quarterbacks Will Arndt and Jonathon Jennings.

These moves made by the Redblacks came shortly after the trade which gave the team the rights to former Calgary Stampeders quarterback Nick Arbuckle. Although they traded for his rights, the Redblacks are yet to sign Arbuckle to a contract. Things are beginning to get serious between both Marcel Desjardins and Nick Arbuckle, and it looks like he may be the quarterback in Ottawa this season.

Although it looks like Arbuckle is our guy, Matt Nichols was just recently released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers where he played 5 years under Paul LaPolice’s offensive system. Nichols has been able to speak with the Redblacks since he was released by Winnipeg, although nothing has been announced for a contract.

As we sit just over 2 weeks away from CFL free agency, it looks as if the Redblacks have it narrowed down to Matt Nichols or Nick Arbuckle to take the starting quarterback job this season.

Who do you think will be the QB?

Ottawa Redblacks sign former NFL defensive backs, Marcus Roberson and David Jones

This CFL off-season has felt extra long for the Ottawa Redblacks, and we are yet to reach CFL Free Agency. Having to go out and get a new coaching staff, make trades, and put together a few transactions this CFL off-season has been very busy for the Redblacks front office led by Marcel Desjardins.

Through the past few weeks, the team has been able to sign 26 new players, re-sign 6, release 10 players and trade for the rights of Quarterback Nick Arbuckle from Calgary. In the list of the 26 new guys coming to Ottawa are both Marcus Roberson and David Jones. The two players are NFL experienced defensive backs, and both of them are ready to come to camp and prove themselves. Roberson said in a message, “I’m excited to be a part of the squad!”

If they are excited, we should be too. The two defensive backs have had a great career up to this point and if given the chance they both can be play makers on this Redblacks defense.

Roberson’s road to Ottawa

In 2014, Marcus Roberson left the University of Florida one year early to enter the 2014 NFL Draft. As a Gator, Roberson made a name for himself playing a total of 30 games in the 3 seasons he spent there. In the 30 games, Roberson tallied up over 56 tackles, 20 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, one forced fumble, one sack and one fumble recovery. Unfortunatley for his future, he didn’t have enough around him to be selected in the 2014 NFL draft.

After going undrafted in 2014, Marcus Roberson was signed to a future reserved contract with the St Louis Rams. Roberson went on to play 25 games in St Louis being split into 2 seasons, and he made a lot of plays at the high level. In both 2014 and 2015, Marcus had 39 tackles, 7 pass deflections, one interception and one forced fumble.

Following a partially successful two seasons in St Louis, Roberson was cut by the Rams and later signed by the Buffalo Bills. Marcus’ stint in Buffalo wasn’t as long as the one in St Louis, although he was still able to play 7 games, recording 2 tackles and a pass deflection.

Roberson didn’t spend another season with the Bills after his 2016 season with the team, and after Buffalo Marcus Roberson found himself as a free agent other than a quick training camp with the Houston Texans.

After being cut by the Texans, he looked at other football options and found himself signing for the Toronto Argonauts. Roberson spent 11 games in Toronto for the 2018 CFL season, where he made 20 tackles alongside 2 interceptions. If given the chance in Ottawa this upcoming season, Roberson’s football career could be revived.

David Jones signs with Redblacks

To pair with Marcus Roberson’s contract signed with Ottawa is David Jones who signed with the team on the 21st of January. Before this contract came to Jones, he had a solid career going south of the border. Although he hadn’t played many games in the NFL he put together a good season on the New England Patriots practice squad in 2018 where he got his chance to experience a super bowl run with Brady and the bunch.

Ahead of his professional contracts he’s had the chance to write his name to, Jones had a historic career at the University of Richmond. At Richmond, David Jones was able to make a name for himself as a turnover machine. In the 4 seasons he played at Richmond, Jones was able to put on the uniform and play 41 games and every one of the games played, he made an impact.

In 41 games, Jones was able to total for 195 tackles, 14 interceptions, 20 pass deflections, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries. These stats may not mean much, although with those stats he put himself in the NCAA record books. In the 14 interceptions he had, 9 came in the 2015 season where he led the FCS and he also tied the NCAA record with 4 interceptions in a single game.

As seen, Jones had no trouble putting up good stats and breaking records at the NCAA level, so if given the chance in Ottawa Jones can make a name for himself in Canada.
